What started as a hobby shop in 2004, Performance Vehicle Works (PVW) has evolved to a full service premier fabrication and restoration facility.
Owner Timmy McKichan’s passion for racing started like many others, from multiple generations of family involvement to directly behind the wheel himself.
This families racing history began in the 70’s when Timmy’s father, Gordon McKichan was the crew chief for Earl Ross, the only Canadian to ever win a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
With success and drive already in his blood it was time for Timmy’s turn behind the wheel. Racing in Canada, he won multiple races and a championship in the regional series.
McKichan’s made the life decision to move from Canada to Elkin, North Carolina in December of 1989 to work for the legendary Junior Johnson and follow his racing endeavors. He then began racing Late Models in 1989 and 1990 in North Carolina and Virginia.
After many wins, not only behind the wheel, but in the pits it was time for the next level of McKichan’s racing resume.
After working for some of the industry’s best including Junior Johnson, David Blair Motorsports, Larry Hedrick Motorsports and one of the initial ground employees at Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Timmy McKichan is no stranger to hard work, success and results.
In 2007, he went into business full time as owner of Performance Vehicle Works.
McKichan took his family history, his experience and passion for racing to mold a successful and industry respected full service fabrication and restoration company.
McKichan had the incredible opportunity to be an integral part of Patrick Sheltra’s 2010 ARCA Racing Series championship efforts, an honor some strive for their entire career, but never achieve. Not only did the team utilize PVW services, but he also guided Sheltra from above as his primary spotter.
Timmy McKichan has come full circle in the racing community and beyond. The only thing that makes him better than his racing knowledge and reputation is his reputation and respect through the garage.
Ron Drager, ARCA (Automotive Racing Club of America) President and Chief Executive Office
"When we initially discussed the process of mounting the new composite material body manufactured by Five Star to an existing chassis and rollcage, we wanted to find someone who was well known, was doing business in both the ARCA and NASCAR K&N garages, and would understand our goals for the project and be able to provide valuable feedback. That led us to Timmy McKichan and Performance Vehicle Works, and our experience in working together has been very positive."
Josh Williams ARCA Racing Series driver and team owner signifies that model by saying:
“Timmy and the whole PVW team are a top notch group of guys, who do some of the best quality work I have ever seen,” he said. “Great quality work and just all around good people to work with. I wouldn’t give my business to anyone else but PVW, all the way.”
Working in various roles, from driver to spotter, paint shop, engine dyno, fabrication to restoration, Timmy McKichan is highly respected in the industry and beyond.
Performance Vehicle Works was hand chosen to work with NASCAR and the Automobile Racing Club of America to help develop and build a new composite body for competition in 2015.
Performance Vehicle Works not only built the submittal prototypes, but the company was instrumental with the aerodynamic package of the body achieved mainly through wind tunnel time.
Additionally, PVW is a Five Star authorized composite dealer.
